Outreach

In a fast-paced and ever-changing world, Sherborne Girls recognises that academic success alone is not enough to prepare young people for life beyond school. Social and environmental responsibility are embedded within the school’s educational ethos, ensuring that pupils develop the confidence, compassion and judgement needed to navigate the modern world with integrity and independence.

Outreach is a central element of a Sherborne Girls education, offering pupils structured, meaningful opportunities to engage with both their local community and the wider world. The school has a strong and long-standing relationship with the town of Sherborne, and pupils are actively encouraged to contribute to civic life. Through initiatives such as Youth Advisor roles within the Town Council, volunteering and placements in local GP surgeries, and regular partnerships with primary schools, care homes and community organisations, students gain first-hand experience of responsibility, service and leadership in real-world settings.

These local opportunities help students to develop essential life skills, including communication, teamwork, empathy and self-confidence. They also encourage a strong sense of belonging and purpose, enabling pupils to understand their role as active, responsible members of their community.

Global citizenship

Alongside this local engagement, Sherborne Girls promotes global citizenship through a broad range of national and international opportunities. These include international exchange programmes, online overseas mentoring, overseas leadership trips, academic partnerships, educational visits and talks from inspiring guest speakers. Such experiences broaden perspectives, build cultural awareness and develop adaptability — skills that are increasingly important in higher education and future careers.

Outdoor education

Participation in outreach, volunteering and leadership activities directly complements and informs the delivery of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the Combined Cadet Force programme. The skills developed through community engagement — including teamwork, respect, perseverance, initiative and problem-solving — are reinforced through outdoor education and leadership training, ensuring a coherent and purposeful approach to pupil character development across the school.

Supporting wellbeing

The extensive co-curricular programme at Sherborne Girls also plays a vital role in supporting pupils wellbeing. By offering opportunities for enjoyment, creativity and balance, co-curricular activities help students to develop healthy routines, form lasting friendships and maintain a positive relationship with learning — supporting both academic success and personal happiness.
