Together to the Top: Sherborne Pupils Celebrate Oxbridge Success

Sherborne Girls and Sherborne Boys have been celebrating some exciting academic news as eight students from across the two schools’ received offers to study at Oxford and Cambridge Universities this academic year. Alex Boyd Williams, Deputy Head (Sixth Form) at Sherborne Boys said, “We are so proud of all the pupils who worked so hard and with such flair and curiosity throughout this highly competitive process. We know that all of them will go on to top ranking universities in the UK and overseas.”

Sherborne Girls and Sherborne Boys collaborate to offer the absolutely best possible support for pupils who wish to apply for Oxford, Cambridge and other leading UK and international universities. Pupils have one-to-one mentoring with a subject specialist and attend a weekly ‘Thinkers’ club which aims to stretch our most academic students and scholars, and is run collaboratively with the Gryphon - pupils prepare and deliver a series of presentations, enter essay competitions and present seminar papers to their peers. In addition, they attend the half-termly Turing Society, where recent subjects have included talks on Leadership, Linguistics, a Mastermind competition and a debate on fake news.

The range of subjects that this year’s successful candidates will be studying shows the breadth of the Sherborne Schools Group academic offer: from Land Economy to History and Modern Languages; from Human, Social and Political Sciences, to Music and Modern and Medieval Languages; and from History and Politics, to Theology and Religion and, last but not least, Chinese.

David Banks, Director of Sixth Form Sherborne Girls said, “These outcomes reflect not only exceptional academic ability, but also intellectual curiosity, resilience and a genuine love of learning. We are incredibly proud of all the pupils who engaged so thoughtfully with the Oxbridge process, and grateful to the staff who supported them with such care and expertise.”

Inigo from Sherborne Boys is off to Cambridge to study Human, Social and Political Sciences, and says “'One of the best things about Sherborne is how ready and willing teachers are to help with anything beyond the curriculum. I have so many to thank for helping me throughout the process, especially with building interview skills. Human, Social and Political Sciences is a fantastically holistic discipline and I look forward to the possibility of studying it greatly.”

Matilda from Sherborne Girls, who is also off to Cambridge later this year added, "I am delighted to have received an offer to study Modern Languages at the University of Cambridge. During the application process, I was incredibly thankful for all the encouragement and support I received from my teachers. I hope that studying languages will allow me to engage with the world around me, open doors internationally, and hopefully lead to an eventual career in politics or international relations."
